About the only thing that stands out in this misbegotten, misspelt match-fixing tale is the name of the Indian captain. He’s called Ravi Indulkar. That’s right.
Along with a few teammates, this cricketing worthy (Kapoor) is found guilty of throwing a crucial match against Pakistan and banned from the field for a spell. It’s all because of you, he says, pointing an accusing finger at a colleague. Remorse? What’s that? Cricket star’s pa, also a former India captain, falls to the ground. He’s very serious, pronounces a fellow who looks as if he’s never held a stethoscope in his life. Cricket star’s ma gives him one tight slap. Call yourself Indulkar, willya? Take that.
The buxom girlfriend, in thick mascara and thin tees, who’s allegedly studying medicine, says: How can you do this to me? She shows up again when the disgraced lad is reinstated in the team as the captain, no less. The girlfriend, meanwhile, has been appointed, gulp, the team physiotherapist, and is to be seen dabbing antiseptic on our hero’s injured arm: Ravi, tumhe chot to nahin lagi? Says Ravi: Dil ke dard isse kahin gehre hain.
In between, half-naked girls gyrate on a stage, and mobsters in printed shirts wave guns and growl. Somewhere around there, I stopped fighting the film, and had a few guffaws. A bosomy cricket commentator goes by the name of Anna Kisleski, or is it Kieslowski? What’s not to laugh?
World Cupp 2011 is so bad it’s hilarious. screen
