Qaida shifting base to urban Pak

News4u-News Desk-ISLAMABAD: Al-Qaida is gradually shifting its base from the unsafe and spy-infested tribal belt of Pakistan to “more secure urban areas of the country” like the port city of Karachi that cannot be targeted by US drones, according to a media report on Wednesday.

Al-Qaida had operated in the volatile tribal areas bordering Afghanistan with “near impunity” during 2001-08 “but they are on the move, communicating via couriers and moving stealthily in small groups to urban areas”, a former Western intelligence official was quoted as saying by the Daily Times newspaper.

The daily quoted its sources as saying that al-Qaida operatives were now mostly migrating to Karachi, which has a large Pashtun population.

The newspaper said its in-depth investigations had confirmed the presence of senior al-Qaida members and the top leadership of the Afghan Taliban — including members of the Quetta-based “shura” or council — at safe houses located on the outskirts of Karachi.PTI

Al-Qaeda shifting base from tribal to urban areas in Pak

News4u – News Desk : (PTI) Al-Qaeda is gradually shifting its base from the unsafe and spy-infested tribal belt of Pakistan to “more secure urban areas of the country” like the port city of Karachi that cannot be targeted by US drones, according to a media report today.

The daily quoted its sources as saying that al-Qaeda operatives were now mostly migrating to Karachi, which has a large Pashtun population.

Many Pashtuns have migrated to Karachi following the launch of anti-militancy operations in the northwest and the recent floods and experts have said al-Qaeda and Taliban elements often find shelter among the Pashtuns.

14-yr term, but Osama cook may be out earlier

News4u-News Desk-Reuters-GUANTANAMO BAY US NAVAL BASE (CUBA): A US military tribunal sentenced Osama bin Laden’s former cook to 14 years in prison, but he is expected to serve far less under a plea deal that remains secret.

The defendant, Sudanese captive Ibrahim al Qosi, pleaded guilty last month in war crimes court at Guantanamo Bay US naval base to charges of conspiring with al-Qaida and providing material support for terrorism.

Military officials said it could be several months before his full plea agreement is made public. But al-Arabiya TV network based in Dubai quoted sources as saying it caps his sentence at two years.

Qosi was the first Guantanamo captive convicted under the administration of President Barack Obama, whose efforts to shut down the detention camp have been blocked by Congress.

His sentencing hit a snag because, according to the judge, US military ignored orders to develop a plan specifying how prisoners would serve their sentences after conviction in the Guantanamo tribunals.

‘Osama in Pakistan; tribal belt global HQ of Qaeda’

News4u – News Desk : (PTI) Describing Pakistan’s lawless tribal belt near Afghanistan as the “global headquarters” of al-Qaeda, top American military commander Mike Mullen has said the US believed that the terror network’s chief Osama bin Laden and his deputy Aiman al-Zawahiri are in this country.

The presence of these terrorist leaders in the region is a reason why “a principal part of the overall Af-Pak strategy is focussed on elimination of safe havens” for them, Mullen told reporters here last night.

His comments came days after US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton ruffled feathers in Islamabad by making a similar statement.

During her recent visit here, Clinton had also said that bin Laden and other top al-Qaeda leaders are in Pakistan, an assertion dismissed by Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi as “speculation”.

Some elements in Pakistan know where bin Laden is: Clinton

News4u-News Desk-Washington, (PTI) Some elements in the Pakistan government know the whereabouts of al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, said US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, warning it against keeping a “poisonous” snake in its backyard.

Clinton also said the Pakistanis leadership during her visit to Islamabad has been told to take on every non-governmental armed force inside the country.

The US’ top diplomat said Pakistan’s intelligence establishment must share with the US any information about movement of bin Laden and al-Qaeda number two Ayman al-Zawahiri.

“I want those guys. I will not be satisfied until we get them,” she said in interviews to American TV channels during her just concluded visit to Islamabad.

“…I assume somebody, somebody in this government, from top to bottom, does know where bin Laden is.

Bin Laden and Mulla Omar still in Pak: Clinton

News4u-News Desk-Islamabad, PTI) US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton today said she believed that al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden was still in Pakistan.

Clinton also said Washington believed that Taliban chief Mulla Omar was also in the country.

“I believe (bin Laden) is here in Pakistan and it would be very helpful if we could take them (al-Qaeda leaders),” the US Secretary of State said in a television interview in between her heavy schedule.

Though the Pakistani leaders claim that the world’s most wanted terrorist may be dead, top US officials have been maintaining that bin Laden along with his powerful deputy Ayman al-Zawahiri are in Pakistan.

Last month, the CIA chief Leon Pannetta said the al-Qaeda chief was in “deep underground” in Pakistan, nine years after he disappeared from public sight in 2001 in Afghanistan.

Osama’s son wants to date Drew Barrymore

News4u-News Desk-PTI-LONDON: Omar bin Laden, the son of fugitive al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden, says he is dreaming of a date with Hollywood “most beautiful” actress Drew Barrymore.

The 29-year-old, who recently split from his British wife Zaina, a six-time married grandmother and 25 years his senior, said he is now single and wants to date Drew Barrymore, 35.

“I want to go to America and I would love to meet Drew Barrymore. I am single now and she is the most beautiful woman in Hollywood,” he told ‘The Sun’.

The junior Laden also spoke about his love of American culture, saying that he enjoys Jim Carrey films, American football, rock music and even Laurel And Hardy.

He also admires Pop singer Madonna. “She’s such a great dancer for a woman of her age,” he said.

Speaking at length about his likings from a hotel in Doha, Omar said he was glued to the recently concluded FIFA World Cup. “My favourite player is Lionel Messi.”

Regarding Osama bin Laden, he said he believes his father is still alive, although he does not know where he is.

“My dad is on the Earth but I don’t know where. He’s still alive. If that sort of person dies, you could never make it a secret. The world changes if he dies,” Omar said.

Osama Bin Laden readies for a Bollywood debut

News4u-Entertainment Desk-reuters-Osama bin Laden is coming soon to a theatre near you.

The al Qaeda leader looms large over the upcoming Bollywood film Tere Bin Laden, the story of an aspiring young journalist who finds a route to fame when he comes across a lookalike of Laden.

“The film looks to give a fresh perspective to the repercussions of 9/11 that a lot of people are facing but I want to do it through humour,” said director Abhishek Sharma.

The small-budget film follows a journalist, played by Pakistani pop artist Ali Zafar as he tries to migrate to the US, hoping to make it big. “He is repeatedly denied a visa but when he comes across a lookalike of Laden, he hits upon the idea of making a Laden video,”

Sharma said. “That video makes him famous and ironically he has to use the U.S.’s biggest enemy to create a favourable impression of himself.”

This is not the first Bollywood film to focus on the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks and its aftermath. In a little more than a year, three big-budget films, including Shah Rukh Khan’s “My Name is Khan” have dealt with the subject. But Sharma says Tere Bin Laden doesn’t get too serious about the topic. He doesn’t expect any controversy and says there’s no reason for anyone to feel offended. “It’s a satire, and a mad comedy. I don’t want to preach.”

Tere Bin Laden, which opens across India on July 16, doesn’t have a star-studded cast but several Bollywood celebrities are rooting for it. Actor Salman Khan called it a super film on his Twitter account and producer-director Karan Johar has also been promoting the movie.

Zafar: I found Tere Bin Laden hilarious!

News4u – Entertainment Desk : Initially wary of playing the lead in Tere Bin Laden, Pakistani actor Ali Zafar was convinced by the film’s humorous tone and didactic purpose

Q. How and when did you bag the role in Tere Bin Laden?

I was in Mumbai shooting a TV commercial, when Rashid, a common friend of the director Abhishek Sharma and me, told me about the project. I then met Abhishek and we discussed the film. Whenever somebody hears the name of Bin Laden, one is bound to be sceptical. I was too, initially. But once I heard the story I found it hilarious and decided to go ahead with it. You will relate to the funny circumstances when you watch it.

Q. Although it is a humorous take, weren’t you afraid of taking the plunge, since controversies regarding the film and the lead character might raise their head?

The story is basically about a Pakistani reporter who wishes to go to America and, in his pursuit, has to find Osama Bin Laden. Most South Asians have a very different take on the Bush era or Osama Bin Laden. We wanted to satirize these things. I did the film because it revolves around my character. Besides, I was keen on breaking the perceptions about the muslim community that have been formed in the last decade or so.

Q. As a citizen of your country, did you also feel responsible towards doing this film?

Because of a minority group, you cannot put everyone into trouble. Besides the humour, I believed the film had a very important message to send out.

Q. You started off as a singer in Pakistan. How did acting happen?

The acting profession isn’t alien to me. I have done a lot of TV and theatre in Pakistan.

Over the years, I have also acted in my music albums.

This time around when I got a chance to do a film, I found it to be a natural progression.

Q. You have come to India at a point when the relations between India and Pakistan are not at their cordial best.

I think both countries share a love-hate relationship. Art and culture is the only binding force. And I strongly believe love always wins. Also, I have been to Mumbai in the past for my albums and I love the warmth the city exudes. I feel very welcome here.

Q. Most artistes from neighbouring countries have complained about the difficulty in obtaining an Indian visa. Was it hard for you to get one?

Not at all. Each time I came for the shoot, I came on multiple entry visa. For the promotions too, I will be using the same kind of visa.

Q. Was Bollywood always of interest to you?

I think when you are living in the subcontinent, Bollywood is subconsciously a part of you. When you are a singer or an artiste, you do feel you want to be part of the industry some day.

Q. Pakistani actors have traditionally not done well in Bollywood. Do you wish to change the trend?

I hope that I have changed the trend. I cannot change things overnight, but with the kind of projects that I will work on, I hope to do well. I am in talks with a few producers for the same.

Q. Do you plan to release the film in Pakistan as well?

I have recently launched a production house called Alif Films through which I hope to release the film in Pakistan.

Q. Will you shift base to Mumbai?

Artistes are like vagabonds. Wherever your art takes you, you bound to travel there. Then be it Mumbai or New York, it doesn’t matter. Screen

Osama to have a British grandchild

News4u-News Desk-PTI-LONDON: A 24-year-old British woman is all set to give birth to al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden’s grandchild, a media report said.

According to the Sun, Louise Pollard is acting as a surrogate mother for Osama’s 29-year-old son Omar bin Laden — and she is undergoing fertility treatment to conceive using Omar’s sperm and eggs from his British wife Jane Felix Browne.

The Qatar-based Laden couple, who are desperate to have a child but cannot on their own, contacted Louise through a surrogacy website. And now they have agreed for her to carry their baby. If the bid is successful, it will mean Osama having a British grandchild.

Omar, a scrap metal dealer, has a 6-year-old son from a previous marriage. But after tying the knot in 2007 with the 54-year-old granny, he’s keen to have another.

The fourth eldest child of the world’s most wanted terrorist, and his wife have been based in Qatar for two years after Britain rejected several of his visa applications to live in this country.

Omar, whose mum is Osama’s first wife Najwa, met Jane on a riding trip to Egypt in March 2007. He became the granny’s sixth husband when they wed a month later. Multiple sclerosis-sufferer Jane has three adult children from previous relationships. She converted to Islam before meeting Omar and now uses the name Zaina Mohamad Al-Sabah bin Laden.
