Telangana bandh peaceful;HM convenes meeting on 5th Jan

News4u-News Desk-In a bid to find a way out of the Telangana imbroglio, the Centre on Wednesday convened a meeting in New Delhi on 5th January of eight recognised political parties in Andhra Pradesh for a discussion on the issue.

Meanwhile, barring stray incidents, the Telangana bandh today called by the all-party Joint Action Committee in support of the separate statehood demand was peaceful. The pro-Telangana agitators organised road blockades and Dharna in the districts of Telangana region. The APSRTC suspended over 9,000 buses plying in the Telangana region.

Home Minister P Chidambaram on Wednesday sent an invitation to leaders of the 8 parties following his 23rd December statement in which he had promised to hold wide ranging consultations with all political parties and groups in the state on the issue of separate Telangana state.

Congress, TDP, Telangana Rashtra Samiti, CPI, CPI(M), Praja Rajyam, BJP and MIM are the recognised parties in Andhra Pradesh.

The Centre’s decision comes after detailed discussions in the government and at the highest political level in Congress party in the last few days after political parties were divided on regional lines in Andhra Pradesh and demanded immediate steps on formation of the separate state.

On Tuesday, TRS chief K Chandrasekhara Rao had said he was prepared for talks but would not not accept setting up of any committee on the issue which, he considered, would be a waste of time.

Parties and leaders from Telangana cited the statement of Chidambaram on December 9 in which he had promised that that the process of forming Telangana state would be initiated.

Both the statements  had a counter effect in their respective regions when legislators had resigned from Parliament and state Assembly.

However, the MPs and MLAs from coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema have withdrawn their resignations following the December 9 statement.

The MPs and MLAs of various political parties and the 13 Congress Ministers from Telangana region in the Andhra Pradesh government have still not not withdrawn their resignation.

In a release issued on Wednesday, the Home Ministry expressed satisfaction that the bandh in Telangana region had passed off peacefully.

Telangana bandh peaceful

Barring sporadic incidents, the Telangana bandh on Wednesday called by the all-party Joint Action Committee (JAC) in support of the separate statehood demand

was peaceful.

There were no incidents of violence and the bandh was totally peaceful till noon, DGP R R Girish Kumar told reporters in Hyderabad.

However, normal life was paralysed across the Telangana region as the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) and the Railways suspended services.

The pro-Telangana agitators organised road blockades and dharnas in the districts of Telangana region. The JAC leaders also held a rally at Baghlingampalli locality here but they were taken into custody by the police.

“All parties have come under one umbrella and formed the JAC. We demand that the Centre table a bill in Parliament for formation of separate Telangana state immediately. Otherwise, we will intensify the agitation,” JAC Convener Prof Kodandaram told reporters.

Ludhiana remains peaceful; curfew relaxed at some places

News4u-News Desk-Curfew was relaxed for 90 minutes in at least three places in Ludhiana, where situation on Sunday remained peaceful, a day after violent clashes between police and Sikh protesters objecting to a religious congregation by a sect claimed one life and injured 15 others.

The curfew was relaxed for 90 minutes in areas falling under Model town, Saraba Nagar and police station division number five, officials said adding the situation remained peaceful but tense during the period.

However, strict vigil was in place in rest of the city with forces keeping an eagle’s watch on the situation.

The curfew will remain clamped till further orders to maintain peace and order, Deputy Commissioner Vikas Garg said on Sunday.

Also, the funeral of Darshan Singh (54), who was killed in the clash went off peacefully at his native Lohara village.

The Punjab Government has announced an ex-gratia grant of Rs five lakh to the next of kin of the victim, officials said in Ludhiana.

Singh along with other Sikh radicals was trying to move towards the venue of a religious function organised by Ashutosh Maharaj. When they refused to stop, police allegedly resorted to firing resulting in Singh’s death and injuries to several others.

Meanwhile, Sikh radical organisations, including Damdami Taksal, have called for Punjab shut down on Monday.

However, essential services including medical, rail and public transport have been exempted from the shut down.

In view of the shut down call, the Deputy Commissioner of Ludhiana has issued orders that all schools, colleges and other educational institutions in the district will remain closed on Monday.

While the Punjab Congress has demanded dismissal of the Parkash Singh Badal government for allegedly failing to maintain law and order in Ludhiana, the CPI said violence in the industrial city was direct result of the policy of appeasement pursued by the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD)-BJP government towards radical Sikh organisations in the state.

Seeking imposition of President Rule, Punjab Congress spokesman Sukhpal Singh Khaira said “Badal and his son and deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal have failed to maintain peace in the state on more than one occasion.”

“The last two days’ mob violence in Ludhiana has clearly indicated the total collapse of law and order in the state,” he said.

“Akali Dal has learnt no lesson from several years of terrorism in the state. The same people are leading the radical organisations today who were once the kingpins of terrorism in its hey days,” Joginder Dayal, member of the national executive of CPI said.
