Pak nukes has more to do with India than Iran:Turkey

News4u-News Desk-Washington, (PTI) Pakistan’s nuclear weapons has more to do with India than Iran, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu has said.

“Nobody thinks that there is an arms race between Pakistan and Iran on nuclear issue. It is more Pakistan-India balance of power,” Davutoglu said in response to a question after his speech at the Council on Foreign Relations, a Washington-based think tank.

“Usual contrast in the Middle East is Iran and Israel, not Iran and Pakistan,” he said. “But we hope that Pakistan and India, they will have the same principles to be implemented there. We don’t have any exception here. The principles should be applicable to all,” the Turkish Foreign Minister said.

Responding to a question on nuclear disarmament, he said Turkey is in its favour.

“In fact, everybody is in favour of peace.

US House panel votes for Armenian ‘genocide’ label

News4u-News Desk- A US congressional panel voted Thursday to label as ”genocide” the World War One-era massacre of Armenians by Turkish forces, despite pressure from the Obama administration and Turkey to drop the matter.

The House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee voted 23-22 to approve the non-binding resolution, clearing it for consideration by the full House. But it was unclear whether the measure will get a floor vote.

It calls on President Barack Obama to ensure US policy formally refers to the massacre as genocide, putting him in a tight spot.

On the one side is NATO ally Turkey, which rejects calling the events genocide. On the other side is an important US Armenian-American constituency and their backers in Congress ahead of Congressional elections in November.

Turkey had warned its ties with the United States would be damaged and Ankara’s efforts to normalize relations with Armenia could be harmed if the resolution were approved.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton telephoned House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Howard Berman, a fellow Democrat, to argue the measure could harm efforts to normalize Turkish-Armenian relations.

Turkey and Armenia signed a protocol last year to normalize relations but it has yet to pass through the parliament of either country. Obama called Turkish President Abdullah Gul Thursday to urge quick ratification.

Despite Clinton’s appeal, Berman went ahead with a committee debate and a vote. He said Turkey was a ”vital” ally but ”nothing justifies Turkey’s turning a blind eye to the reality of the Armenian genocide.”

Muslim Turkey accepts that many Christian Armenians were killed by Ottoman forces but denies that up to 1.5 million died and that it amounted to genocide — a term employed by many Western historians and some foreign parliaments.

Congressional opponents expressed concern about harming ties with Turkey, whose help the United States needs to solve confrontations from Iraq to Iran and Afghanistan.

Turkey pulls envoy after US vote on ‘genocide’ label

A US congressional panel voted to label as ”genocide” the World War One-era massacre of Armenians by Turkish forces, prompting Turkey to recall its ambassador from Washington.

The vote Thursday triggered an immediate condemnation from Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan, who recalled Turkey’s ambassador to Washington for consultations.

Erdogan said he worried the measure would harm Turkish-U.S. ties and efforts by Muslim Turkey and Christian Armenia to end a century of hostility.

The vote put Obama in a tight spot between his desire to maintain good relations with Turkey, a Muslim but secular democracy that plays a vital role for US interests from Iran to Afghanistan to the Middle East.

ARMENIA HAILS VOTE

”We highly appreciate the decision,” Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian said. ”This is further proof of the devotion of the American people to universal human values and is an important step towards the prevention of crimes against humanity.”

The price on Turkey’s 2030 benchmark Global Bond did not change after the vote. It remained down 0.44 points in price to 160, yielding 6.465 per cent.

”I don’t think there will be any reaction in the markets unless the political response from Turkey elevates it as an issue,” said A.J. Mediratta, senior managing director at Greylock Capital Management in New York.

”Clearly the US administration didn’t want this to come to a head and I think the Turkish government understands this. If there is a reaction, it will come at the London open tomorrow.”

Turkish PM: All linked to coup plot will be tried

News4u- News Desk- Turkey’s prime minister on Friday vowed to put everyone who conspired against the country’s democracy on trial, as the number of military officers charged and jailed for allegedly plotting a 2003 coup against his Islamic-based government rose to 31.

The number includes seven admirals and four generals and it represents the largest-ever crackdown on Turkey’s military, which has ousted four civilian governments since 1960.

In a new nationwide sweep on Friday, police detained 18 more officers, one still on active duty.

The officers were detained in 13 different cities and were being transferred to Istanbul.

It brings the total of officers detained this week to 67.

The military has wielded strong influence on politics for decades, but has seen its powers dramatically curtailed by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s government, which took steps to put the military under civilian rule.

“An impaired democracy is not the fate of this country,” Erdogan told lawmakers at a televised meeting.

“No one is above the law, no one is untouchable, no one isprivileged.”

The probe has fuelled tensions between the government and the fiercely secular military and shaken the markets, but Erdogan has dismissed calls by opposition parties for early elections.

Turkish pro-Kurdish party ban stirs protests

News4u-News Desk-Clashes have erupted between protesters and police in Turkey after Kurdish politicians resigned en masse from parliament over a Constitutional Court ruling which banned their party.

The violence flared across the country as well as in Turkey’s capital Istanbul.

Protesters erected barricades on main roads in Istanbul, setting them ablaze.

Riot police, backed by water cannon, fired smoke grenades to disperse the crowd.

In the town of Cizre, riot police stormed a neighbourhood and chased protesters while firing smoke grenades.

The Democratic Society Party was ordered to be dissolved by Turkey’s Constitutional Court on Friday after it was found guilty of cooperating with Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) separatist guerrillas.

Turkish mine explosion kills 19 workers

News4u-News Desk-An explosion ripped through a coal mine in northwestern Turkey, causing a cave-in and killing 19 workers, officials said on Friday.

“I have to give you the bad news. Rescue teams have reached the accident area. Unfortunately, all the workers are dead,” Labour Minister Omer Dincer said in televised remarks.

The workers were trapped at a depth of 220 to 250 metres late on Thursday in the mine near the town of Mustafakemalpasa in the province of Bursa when the explosion caused a gallery to collapse.

Bursa governor Sahabetting Harput said the cave-in came after the workers set off some dynamite, but Dincer said the cause of the explosion was not yet clear and experts would be called in to investigate.

“It was not a very powerful explosion, but the entire gallery, the fortifications totally collapsed,” he said.

Additional rescue teams were sent in from five nearby provinces, but the rescuers could not immediately enter the mine due to high concentrations of methane.

They had to wait for hours as air was pumped into the mine to dissolve the gas.

Dincer said the bodies of only two workers had been removed so far and that conditions in the collapsed gallery hampered rescue efforts.

7 Turkish soldiers killed in attack

News4u-News Desk-Assailants raked a military vehicle with automatic weapon fire on Monday, killing at least seven Turkish soldiers in the first attack on troops in a central region of Turkey in nearly a decade, authorities said.

Authorities could not identify the attackers, but suspicion fell on Kurdish and leftist militants because the ambush followed violent street protests by Kurdish rebel supporters across the country in recent weeks.
The attack also came on the eve of a critical court case in which Turkey’s Constitutional Court will start deliberating whether to shut down the country’s pro-Kurdish political party, which is often accused of being a front for the Kurdish rebel group.
The vehicle came under fire in a rugged mountainous area near a military outpost near the town of Resadiye in the Tokat province, said the town’s mayor Rafet Erdem.

The soldiers were returning to the outpost following a routine patrol of the area. Three other soldiers were wounded in the ambush.
The military said it has sent reinforcements to the region and that operations to catch the attackers were under way.

Turkish assembly elects former Islamist as speaker

News4u-News Desk-Turkey’s parliament elected the ruling AK Party’s candidate Mehmet Ali Sahin as its new speaker on Wednesday, but the former Islamist failed to win the backing of the secularist opposition, setting the stage for possible future tension.

Opposition parties criticised the Islamist-rooted AK Party for ignoring calls to field a candidate who would get cross-party

backing. The opposition wanted outgoing speaker Koksal Toptan re-elected.

The appointment is not likely to change government policy as power rests firmly in the hands of Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan, and the AK Party has a big majority in parliament.

But Sahin’s appointment risks making consensus-building in parliament over reforms sought by the European Union more difficult.

Plane crashes at Amsterdam, 1 killed, 20 hurt

News Desk- News4u : A Turkish plane slammed into a field while attempting to land at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport and broke into three pieces, Dutch police said. Turkish Airlines said one person was killed and 20 injured.

Turkey’s Transport Minister Binali Yildirim says 135 passengers and eight crew were aboard the Turkish Airlines flight from Istanbul to Amsterdam.

Police spokesman Jaap Hage said that a Turkish Airlines 737-800 had crashed in a field next to a runway.

The plane, Flight TK1951, left Istanbul’s Ataturk Airport at 8:22 am (1152 IST).

An airport spokeswoman told Dutch NOS news that all flights to and from Schiphol had been suspended.

NOS quoted a local reporter, Onno Beukers, as saying that the wreckage was lying in a field next to the runway and that emergency services were treating passengers in the field.

A photo shown by the NOS showed the plan lying in three pieces in the muddy field. It did not appear that the plane had caught fire after the crash.  (Associated Press)
